Not All AI Companies Are Created Equal – The Decision-Maker’s Conundrum
Since I have been a NED for Obelisk AI, I have seen them build many tailored solutions to help companies harness the transformative power of AI & Automation.
During this time, it has become very clear that the AI market has become saturated and confused. With this confusion, it’s easy to assume that every company talking about AI is doing the same thing.
Why is there so much confusion?
The problem seems to be that many companies are using the same language: “AI-powered,” “transforming business,” “intelligent automation.” In practice, the value proposition in most cases is different.
Let’s consider the difference between the two main types of AI company approaching businesses today:
• AI Product Companies – These businesses build specific software solutions powered by AI. Their product is their focus. For example, a company that sells an AI-powered document processing platform specifically designed to extract, classify, and route information from invoices, contracts, or forms. That’s their core product, and it’s what they continuously improve and support.
• AI & Automation Services Companies – These are the problem-solvers. They work with clients to design and implement tailored AI and automation solutions across sales, operations, customer service, finance, and more. They don’t sell a product – they deliver outcomes.
Why does it matter?
If you’re a business leader looking to adopt AI, you need to know whether you’re buying a ready-made solution or engaging a partner to build something tailored to your needs.
What test can I use to determine the type of AI company?
It’s quite simple: ask them what they sell. If it’s a product, they’ll show you a demo. If it’s a service, they’ll ask about your business challenges.
Let’s bring clarity to the AI conversation. Make sure you know which type of partner you need – or at least how to tell the difference.
