Culture: The Invisible Force
Over the years, I have been fortunate to have experienced a great company culture. I have also been able to play a part in shaping a healthy culture that promoted fairness, opportunity, openness, and innovation.
The interesting thing is, company culture is not written down in the staff handbook, and it’s certainly not something you can fix with a team-building day.
Culture is shaped quietly, consistently, and powerfully – by what leaders say and do, what they reward, and perhaps most tellingly, what they’re willing to tolerate.
It’s easy to say we value collaboration, trust, and initiative. But if our actions lean more towards control, hierarchy, or “do it my way or the highway,” that’s the culture your team will experience, whether you intended it or not.
Micromanagement tends to shrink culture.
Trust helps culture to flourish and grow.
One of the clearest signals of the culture we’re creating is how we delegate. If we:
- Give clarity and space – we build confidence.
- Listen to new ideas – we spark innovation.
- Show trust – it becomes embedded in the culture.
Culture doesn’t live in the mission statement. It lives in our daily habits and behaviour.
So it’s worth asking:
- Does our culture empower or restrict?
- Does it encourage ownership or breed dependency?
- Does it welcome different perspectives or quietly discourage them?
Every strategy succeeds or fails on the strength of the culture we breed.
Build a culture that works for you and for your team.
