IBM Z – How We All Depend on it

What do buying your groceries, insuring a car, booking a flight and making a payment have in common?

We do these things every day without thinking about the complex technology ecosystems operating behind them.

When technology works well, we barely notice it.

During my career, I’ve seen first-hand the breadth of industries where IBM mainframes play an important role, from banking and financial services to retail, insurance, automotive, transport, airlines and energy.

That experience gave me a much broader perspective on IBM Z.

It isn’t simply about the technology sitting in a data centre. It’s about the businesses, services and everyday activities that technology helps support.

There’s another part of this story that matters just as much:

The opportunity to become part of it.

IBM Z continues to need people who can maintain, develop, integrate, secure and modernise the ecosystem, combining established knowledge and experience with new skills in areas such as AI, APIs, automation, Linux, DevOps, cybersecurity and hybrid cloud.

For experienced IBM Z professionals, that creates an opportunity to share knowledge while continuing to learn.

For the next generation of technologists, it offers the chance to bring new skills and ideas into an enterprise technology ecosystem that may be far closer to their everyday lives than they realise.

In my latest IBM blog, I look behind some of those everyday activities and consider both what IBM Z helps make possible and the opportunity to become part of what it does next.
